Retro is a 2025 art trend, and this artist is already ahead of the pack with these Art Pop-style images

The Rubell Family Collection is best known as one of the biggest private contemporary art collections in the country. After wowing art gazers at its Wynwood digs for 23 years, the Rubell Family Collection opened its doors in Miami’s Allapattah District in 2019. There you have it, folks – a whirlwind tour of Florida’s art scene that’s more colorful than a flamingo’s feathers and more surprising than an alligator in your swimming pool.

But one dominant theme was mass production, particularly in regards to the role of the artwork in a culture of disposable objects and easily reproducible images. Pop artists felt that the art exhibited in museums or taught at schools did not represent the real world, and so looked to contemporary mass culture for inspiration instead. At the height of its heyday, Pop Art was often heralded as ‘anti-art’ for refusing to abide by contemporary art standards at the time. Pop artists like Andy Warhol used repetition as a recurring theme within their Pop art artwork. Using silkscreen, he could quickly reproduce images and therefore the quantity of art. Think celebrity Pop art images of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, or everyday household objects such as Campbell’s soup cans.

Who created Pop Art?

Bunnies and the rest of Polke’s Raster dot paintings, do not invite a deep, personal identification with the image but rather the images become allegories for the self as it lost amidst the flood of commecial imagery. Polke’s vision of popular culture is far more critical than any of the New York artists, and is rooted in the skeptical attitude held by the Capitalist Realists. Rather than the “cool” detachment of New York, Polke cleverly critiques popular culture and how it affects the individual using the same mass-market image-making techniques. In the early 1960s, Lichtenstein gained renown as a leading Pop artist for paintings sourced from the popular comics. Although artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns had previously integrated popular imagery into their works, no one hitherto had focused on cartoon imagery as exclusively as Lichtenstein. His work, along with that of Andy Warhol, heralded the beginning of the Pop Art movement, and, essentially, the end of Abstract Expressionism as the dominant style.

His name is synonymous with the movement and Pop Art painting to the point where you could easily forgive someone for thinking he’s the only one who did it. But the world evolved where products and advertising became inescapable in our daily lives. The process is the same (examining and engaging the world around them) but the output was very different. Pop Art is “low art” on purpose — not because the questions changed, but because the answers did. Richard Hamilton’s collage presents a living room space filled with objects and ideas that, according to Hamilton, were crowding into the post-war consciousness.

Comparisons were evident during the first exhibit of Pop art in the region at the Pasadena Art Museum, in 1962. It was entitled New Paintings of Common Objects, which unified artists including visiting pop art artists Warhol and Lichtenstein, as well as locals Ed Ruscha, Phillip Hefferton, Wayne Thiebaud, Joe Good, and Robert Dowd. Ruscha placed many signs in his work, noting the signs everywhere in Los Angeles. By English Pop art artist Richard Hamilton, uses glamorized images from American pop culture, for his collage, to illustrate the imagined need to continually buy more. A piece of art in its own right, The Beatles’ cover for their album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was another piece created by Peter Blake. Blake claimed he went about creating the iconic collage by treating it like art, rather than an album cover.

However, Pop art often uses mixed media and can also be observed in the sculptures of artists like Claes Oldenberg or Jeff Koons. Artworks in the Pop art style often employ commercial techniques such as silk screening to produce multiple replicas of artwork. The use of repetition and mass production subverts the narrative that art should be rare or exclusive. Pop Art parodies and democratizes art to make it part of every day, available and accessible to everyone.

Pop Art crosses mediums and is observed across sculpture, paintings, shadow boxes, mixed media artworks, and drawings. What unites Pop Art artworks is the subject matter and themes that inspire them. There are so many more Pop Art artists to discover, including some that came after the initial 1960s and ‘70s heyday. And the Pop Art style continues to be innovative to this day, especially with how easy it is now to create your own digital collages. While Pop Art does have a specific look to it, it will always be rooted in an undying attitude that continues to thrive.
